2023-08-08

The first phase of the South Asian Fellowship on Countering Gender-Based Disinformation reached its triumphant conclusion on August 3, 2023. A joint effort by FATCS and Facts for Friends, this fellowship has emerged as a pioneering stride against disinformation that unjustly targets and suppresses marginalized voices. With the goal of arming participants with the necessary tools and insights to combat the pervasive issue of gender-based disinformation, this fellowship welcomed 20 dedicated fellows, including 17 passionate women from Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Pakistan, who successfully completed the program.

In today's digital landscape, where amplifying the voices of the underrepresented is paramount, a disturbing trend has emerged: the rampant dissemination of toxic gender-based disinformation. This sinister practice subjects women, gender non-conforming individuals, and trans-people to harassment and manipulation, effectively muzzling their rightful presence in public discourse. Leveraging gendered disinformation as a strategic weapon, this practice obstructs decision-making, curtails leadership opportunities, and stifles the expression of crucial public opinions. Acknowledging the urgency of addressing this issue, the fellowship was designed to empower participants to reclaim their voices and dismantle the chains of misinformation.

Delivered through a series of five illuminating online sessions graced by renowned international guest speakers, the fellowship provided participants with an in-depth understanding of various facets related to gender-based disinformation. The sessions encompassed:

  • Fundamental principles of media literacy
  • The intersection of technology, algorithms, and gender-based disinformation
  • The inception, propagation, and motives behind gendered disinformation
  • The exploitation of gendered disinformation as a potent propaganda tool
  • Strategic methodologies and tools to effectively counter gender-based disinformation

Distinguished luminaries in their respective domains enriched the fellowship experience with their expertise:

  • Dr. Maria Giovanna Sessa: A Senior Researcher at EU DisinfoLab, renowned for her leadership in countering disinformation.
  • Prof. Aparna Sharma: From UCLA's Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance, Prof. Sharma shared invaluable insights bridging arts and gendered disinformation.
