2023-07-06

SWPS University, in collaboration with Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (Japan), Peace Studies Center at Myanmar Institute of Theology (Myanmar), Institute for Peace Studies at Nanjing University (China), and Foundation for Advancing Critical Thinking in South Asia, is proud to host the Asian Studies Summer School on Methodology of International Peacebuilding: Youth Academy for Asia Peacebuilding. This unique collaborative platform brings together students, researchers, and professionals from diverse backgrounds who share a passion for peacebuilding and aims to foster cross-cultural exchange and groundbreaking research.

A key focus of the Summer School is the workshop session on "Media, Critical Thinking, and Peacebuilding." In an age of information overload, the session emphasizes the importance of developing critical thinking skills and media literacy to navigate the complex news landscape. Participants explore topics such as confirmation bias, echo chambers, and filter bubbles, enabling them to question their own beliefs and seek diverse perspectives. They also learn techniques to identify reliable news sources through evaluation of journalistic standards and fact-checking practices. By understanding the emotional manipulation tactics employed by the media and social media, attendees gain the ability to critically consume news and make informed decisions.

During the session, participants from various countries, including India, Denmark, and Indonesia, shared their experiences of disinformation in their respective regions and the resulting harm caused to communities. An attendee from India highlighted a case in which hate speech targeting a specific religious community spread during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. M.C. Rasmin, a media and peacebuilding practitioner, presented a compelling case study on the impact of media polarization in Sri Lanka. The study examined the consequences of false information and media manipulation following the 2019 presidential election. It revealed how the exploitation of Sinhala nationalism and the spread of disinformation fueled divisions between communities, leading to mass hysteria and victimization. The case study centered around Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen, a doctor who faced organized disinformation attacks. False allegations were made against him, including claims of secret sterilizations, resulting in severe consequences for Dr. Shafi and his family. Despite the allegations being debunked, they endured harassment, racism, and trauma.

The workshop, led by Dr. M.C. Rasmin and Marta Tomczak, Head of the Oriental Library at SWPS University, highlights the destructive impact of media polarization and disinformation on social unrest. It underscores the urgent need for media literacy and critical thinking skills to counter the spread of false narratives and promote peacebuilding efforts.

The Asian Studies Summer School on Methodology of International Peacebuilding: Youth Academy for Asia Peacebuilding provides a unique opportunity for participants to engage in meaningful discussions, gain valuable insights, and contribute to building a more peaceful world. With SWPS University's commitment to interdisciplinary education and social impact, this collaborative effort aims to empower individuals to challenge disinformation, foster understanding, and work towards a brighter future for Asia and beyond.
